Damen Shipyards Group: Ballast Water Treatment solutions

Damen’s ballast water treatment (BWT) portfolio covers both retrofit and port-based solutions. Damen works with manufacturers Evoqua Water Technologues, BioSea and Trojan Marinex to provide a range of retrofit BWT offerings, serving as a comprehensive full service provider throughout the process. The selected systems are installed modularly, in keeping with the Damen philosophy. Damen’s innovative discharge system , InvaSave, provides port operators with a value added service. InvaSave is aimed at serving vessels too old for retrofit or which do not require BWT capability regularly. The unit can be installed onboard an auxiliary vessel or a truck for easy mobility. Each container-sized unit handles 300m3 water per hour. Operations can be scaled up via multiple unit usage.

The spread of non-native, invasive species has been identified as one of the greatest threats to water-based ecological systems globally. As a result of this, the IMO has prepared the Ballast Water Management Convention to ensure ballast water is effectively treated to remove the threat of spread. In providing this range of innovative solutions, both on board vessels and, uniquely, in ports, Damen is playing its part in ensuring the preservation of the maritime environment around the world.
