Wind and tidal energy stored in both the wind driven seas and swell are a considerable potential source of clean energy. Feadship sees the rise of substantial dedicated wave energy harvesting devices and likes to see systems that could be integrated in ships haravesting this energy for onboard use. In Feadships 2010 Breathe concept design a system is proposed. It harvest wave energy while increasing comfort making obsolete energy consuming stabilizers.
The concept (see Rina Yacht Symposium 2010) includes a secondary bow “anchor” which drives a winch generator. The pratical case suggests that a realistic sea about 22kW of mean power. Storing this in an onboard battery would provide a substantial source of energy. In addition the system may approximately half the vertical motions which for yacht is a considerable increase in comfort. The publication suggests further practical aspects.
