Developments in marine fuels are on Feadships’ radar. A mix of onboard electrical storage, more shore power, sustainable carbohydrates have much potential. Investigations showed the potential of GTL. Other sustainable synthetic diesel-like fuels have much potential due to high energy density, simplicity of containment and (re)usability of existing engines. Another potential fuel which is worth to be explored is Glycerine.
Glycerine is very safe and clean, and has good potential to be obtained from solar radiation without many energy or emissions demanding in-between steps. More critical aspects related to the high viscosity and low energy density and emissions should be evaluated. Some premature studies have been made, and more investigations on the fuel characteristics, ships systems and infrastructure should be required.
