Wärtsilä Low Loss Concept (LLC) or hybrid/ battery system is a power distribution system comprising higher efficiency, lower weight and volume, and a high system redundancy. The basic motive for the design is to reduce and eliminate the need for supply (pulse) transformers to the frequency converters, especially those supplying electric propulsion.
The Wärtsilä hybrid/battery system and its integration with conventional diesel – or dual fuel engine gensets, offers significant efficiency improvement by running the engines on optimal load and absorbing many of the load fluctuations through batteries. By increasing the power redundancy, the system allows the engine to operate closer to its optimum design point where it has highest efficiency and least emissions.
