Bakker Sliedrecht: Drive systems with peak shaving capabilities

Bakker Sliedrecht has developed a drive system combined with an Energy Storage System for efficient peak shaving solutions in a compact design.

The drives common DC bus is directly connected to the ESS, allowing energy flowing from the ESS to the drive motor. Traditionally multiple steps of conversion with energy losses are used: Battery Voltage -> AC Grid Voltage -> variable frequency. By directly coupling the battery Voltage to the internal DC Voltage of the drive system, this concept avoids the multiple conversion steps resulting in a higher efficiency for peak shaving solutions. The peak shaving is done at the right spot where this peaks appears. The peak shavings allow the vessel to run with less generators or better specific fuel consumption.
